Khalid Abdo was thrilled to repay the faith of his coaches after returning from the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens with two pieces of silverware.

As well as leading Villa to glory in the main competition, the skipper also claimed the player of the tournament award.

Abdo said it was an honour to be handed the armband by coaches Ben Petty and Gordon Cowans.

And he was pleased to be able to repay them with some stellar performances.

“It felt great to lift the trophy,” said the Swedish midfielder.

“It was really good that the coaches trusted me to be captain of this Villa team.

“It is honour to be captain of a team like Aston Villa any level, whether it is with the U18s or the U21s.

“It was my first trophy and even though it is a seven-a-side tournament it is great to be able to say you’ve won something.”

But Abdo was keen to play down his individual accolade, insisting the emphasis should be placed on the team’s collective efforts.

“We were a team and played like a team,” he added.

“It felt great to be player of the tournament but the team helped me to win it.

“The most important thing was that we won the main competition. The rest of the team made me look better.

“But it does give you a boost and gives you some self-confidence when you achieve something like this.”
